Buhle trades couch for Comrades

He hopes to impact others on his way to the finish line.

Five years ago, an overweight and unfit Birchleigh North resident decided to change his unhealthy lifestyle. His first step to a healthier life was in tekkies, at a local run.

Little did Buhle Dube (40) know that he would quickly trade the 5km of a parkrun for the approximately 89 gruelling kilometres between Durban and Pietermaritzburg at the world’s largest ultramarathon – the Comrades Marathon.

But, he did. In June, he will join about 20 000 runners from more than 60 countries around the world, where he will run his third Comrades. He will be gunning for his first bronze medal.

“Running changed my life,” he told Express.

“Now, I am taking the next step to transform other people’s lives.”

Every step Dube takes at his next Comrades Marathon will be in support of World Vision South Africa.

According to their mission statement, World Vision is a “Christian community organisation dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential.” The organisation works in nearly 100 countries, serving all people regardless of their religion, race or gender.

Dube’s aim is to raise R5 000 for the charity. His current total stands at R200.

“If you want to help me to change people’s lives, please make a donation,” the passionate runner asked. Readers who share his vision can donate at goo.gl/MVxhdX or contact him at 082 976 6602.

Help this runner make a difference, step by step.
