Great-grand-master Vince paddles off to the SA marathon championships

Vince Buttrick has participated in numerous World Marathon Championships over the past 20 years

Ekurhuleni Kayak Club at Homestead Dam in Benoni hosted the Gauteng Canoe Union marathon championship races over the weekend of June 2 and 3.

The K1 (single discipline) raced on Saturday, including juniors from the schools league (u-8 to 18), and also the seniors and masters. The K2 (doubles event) was hosted on Sunday.

The championships served as trials for the team selection for Gauteng to represent the province at the South African Marathon Championships from June 15 to 17 in St Francis Bay, where the team for South Africa will be selected to represent the country at the World Marathon Championships in Portugal later this year.

Vince Buttrick from Kempton Park has participated in numerous World Marathon Championships over the past 20 years and is still actively participating in long distance events.

Buttrick, partnered by Claude Graham, finished their 18.9km race at Homestead Dam in a time of 1:44. In the singles K1 Buttrick finished in 1:50.

Buttrick, now a great-grand-master (60 +), and Graham will race at the SAs at the weekend.
