5150 triathlon is back in Ekurhuleni in October
The event has been successfully hosted at Germiston Lake since 2013.
Following the high demand for a 5150 triathlon in Gauteng, the Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni will again take place in Germiston this year.
The race is set for October 21 at Germiston Lake.
The event has been successfully hosted at Germiston Lake since 2013, attracting close to 1 400 athletes each year since its inception. It is developing into the biggest standard distance triathlon in South Africa.
Werner Smit, race director of the Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni, said: “It is always exciting hosting the event in the City of Ekurhuleni. With such a massive triathlon following in the Gauteng region, the event is always welcomed with open arms. We look forward to hosting a quality event that we know our athletes enjoy.”
The 5150 triathlon (pronounced fifty-one-fifty) takes the format of an Olympic distance triathlon featuring a 1.5km swim, 40km bicycle ride and 10km run.
Widely regarded as an ideal introduction distance into competitive triathlon, the Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni course starts with a 1.5km swim in Germiston Lake, and then heads out onto the 40km bicycle course along the N17 freeway, turning at the Dalpark Toll Plaza.
The 10km run takes athletes next to the lake through the park towards Germiston Golf Club and finishing in the park.
“In addition to the Olympic distance, we have a FUNTRI distance. This is a less intimidating distance, especially designed to accommodate our first-time triathletes. This shortened distance sets the scene for a fun, non-threatening environment with relaxed rules,” says Smit.
The FUNTRI distance features a 400m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run. The FUNTRI will be available to athletes 14 years and older. Team entries are available with two or three people per team.
