Sports awards for Ekurhuleni women launched

The awards are aimed at providing recognition for Ekurhuleni residents involved in the growth and upliftment of women sports.

The non-profit organisation, Futballing Girls, in partnership with the Ekurhuleni Sport Confederation, have launched the inaugural Ekurhuleni Women in Sports Awards.

The event will be held on September 28 at Ora Bella Restaurant in Boksburg.

The awards are aimed at providing recognition for Ekurhuleni residents involved in the growth and upliftment of women sports from grassroots through to elite professional level, and their achievements over the past 12 months. The awards will be about acknowledging sportswomen across all sporting codes, on and off the field of play, in Ekurhuleni.

“When I founded Futballing Girls, the primary goal was to develop women’s football in various communities, especially previously disadvantaged areas. Through the years I realised how there is a large amount of talent in various communities, but little recognition,” said Moonira Ramathula, who founded Futballing Girls in 2015.

Moonira is also the 2017 G-Sports Volunteer of the Year award winner.

The awards will consist of 16 categories and eligible candidates must reside in Ekurhuleni, adding value to the development of women sports, should at all times promote social cohesion in their respective sporting codes and the individuals should not be fully funded by the government.

Barry Hendricks, Dorcus Zulu, Jomo Sono, Ria Ledwaba and Fran Hilton-Smith share a moment at the launch.

Nominations are open and will close on August 31.
