Local Down Syndrome athletes excel at games

Mathew Craig won medals at the SA Age Group Games in Durban.

Two local Down Syndrome athletes won medals at the SA Age Group Games at Kings Park Athletics Stadium in Durban in September.

Mathew Craig (24) won a silver medal for shot put, bronze medal for discus and was fourth for javelin.

He had been preparing for the games with his personal trainer, Henco Bessenger, for months. Craig has been a member of the Down Syndrome Association Sports Club since 2016.

The Birch Acres resident was part of the opening ceremony and represented Gauteng at the games. “This was Mathew’s best event ever,” said mom Annemarie Craig.

“I am very proud of Mathew because not only did he achieve well at the games, he also did very well with his personal best performances. He did his personal best time in the 1 500m walk,” said Annamarie.

Another Kemptonian, Logan Ferreira (11), won a silver medal for long jump competing in u-13 section at the games.
