Inaugural Modderfontein squash event to become annual
Seasoned Modderfontein players competed against young Egoli players for the Graham Prior Trophy
Modderfontein Squash Club and emerging squash players from the award-winning Egoli squash mass participation programme commemorated World Squash Day at Modderfontein on October 13.
The inaugural event of what is to become an annual tournament was organised by Modderfontein’s first league players, who are previous graduates from the Egoli programme.
Seasoned Modderfontein players competed against young Egoli players for the Graham Prior Trophy. Present to unveil the new floating trophy was Sue Prior, widow of the late Graham Prior.
High-performance coach, Graham Prior, was instrumental in developing young squash talent during his tenure at Egoli Squash, including the top players currently representing Modderfontein. He was widely regarded as one of the best squash coaches in the country.
Graham died in July while on duty as the manager of the SA u-19 squad at the world championships in India.
On a rainy, fun-filled day, Modderfontein won the inaugural tournament by a small margin, but the youngsters have vowed to re-capture the trophy next year.
To promote awareness of the sport, World Squash Day is celebrated worldwide at the beginning of October.
Modderfontein’s highly successful involvement in squash development has received financial support from its main sponsor, Moneyline Financial Services, for the past three years. The club is ranked among the strongest squash clubs in the province.
