The Winnie Mandela Zone Eight Sports Ground will host this year’s episode of the annual Tembisa Youth Soccer Community tournament scheduled for June 17 to 21.
According to Kabelo Mhlongo, one of this tournament’s organisers, the games will feature youngsters between the ages of 11 and 17.
Mhlongo said there’s still time and space for teams to register to be part of this year’s winter games.
“We have space for 16 teams per division and would like to invite all local soccer teams wishing to participate to register,” said Mhlongo.
“We have no serious criteria or conditions, except that teams will be categorised according to their age groups.
“Registration closes on June 15.”
He said registration fees range from R150 for the u-11s to R350 for the u-17 divisions.
Mhlongo said their intention is to keep children away from criminal activities and drugs, which is why the games are hosted during this time of the year.
“Remember that schools are taking a break and the children will soon be on winter holidays. It is an honest truth that our children are faced with serious challenges and temptations and if they are not kept busy the chances of them going astray are huge. We have decided to host these games to keep them occupied and busy. This soccer tournament will keep them away from criminal activities, which include drug and alcohol abuse,” explained Mhlongo.
He said that they have invited scouts from teams participating in the country’s elite leagues, the National First Division and the Premier Soccer League, to scout and identify talent.
“It is our wish for our youngsters to be seen and given an opportunity to try their luck with teams from professional leagues. So, in short, these games will expose our boys to bigger and better opportunities,” he said.
