Getting ready for the Fish River Marathon

Ryan Thompson of Kempton Park is one of the new paddlers learning the ropes

Canoeing clubs are hustling to support training on white water rapids for canoeists planning to do the major A Grade Fish River Canoe Marathon in September.

The river race season has kicked off despite lack of rain as the rivers bake and dry up in the heat of early spring.

North West University-based Watuni Canoe Club in Vanderbijlpark hosted a 22km river race from Henley-on-Klip to Meyerton on August 17 to provide opportunity for paddlers to gain familiarity in white water, as well as gain experience and points towards participating in the Fish River Marathon.

For some paddlers, it will be their First A Grade river race with huge white water. Ryan Thompson of Kempton Park is one of the new paddlers learning the ropes with his more experienced river racing friend, Waide Stevens, of the Victoria Lake Canoe Club based at Germiston Lake.

They finished the 22km river race with minimal problems in a time of one hour 48 minutes.
