Highlands Park proceeds to the quarter-finals

Highlands Park beat Black Leopards on penalties.

It took the lottery of penalties to decide who will proceed to the quarter-finals of the Telkom Cup, between Highlands Park and Black Leopards.

Played before a packed Makhulong Stadium on Sunday, this thriller failed to produce an upright winner on regulation time as the game ended in a goalless stalemate.

But, at the end, it was Highlands Park who progressed to the next stage of this competition with a 6-5 victory.

Before this game, these two sides had earlier in the season played out to a one-all draw, but this cup encounter needed to produce a winner and the home team came out tops.

Coming to this match, the home team looked hungrier for success and bounced back from their MTN8 final heartbreak.

Highlands Park dominated proceedings from the first whistle and created a number of clear scoring opportunities, but failed to make them count.

They were nearly punished by Lesedi Kapinga who also seemed to have left his scoring boots at home, when he missed from point-blank range in the 75th minute of the game.

Neither side could find a winner which forced the game to extra time and eventually penalties, where the home team emerged the day’s victors.

The home team has joined Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, Golden Arrows, SuperSport United and Maritzburg United.
