Phata and SCE Street Tournament held in Emfihleni Section

SCE and Phata hosted the third annual Phata and SCE Street Tournament in Emfihleni Section in Tembisa on November 2.
The tournament saw a flock of teams from all over Tembisa compete for pride and grand prizes. These street games are rapidly growing and people are starting to take notice.
According to the co-organiser, Thabiso Zondo, the aim of the street tournament is to see the youth getting more involved in sports so they don’t became victims of drug and alcohol abuse.
“We also want the youth of Tembisa to showcase their talents and have a bright future. In this edition, we had netball and teams from different sections, including Emfihlweni, Inxiweni and Ivory Park, took part. There were also teams from Bedfordview and Olivien,” said Zondo.
“On the soccer side, we had teams from Phomolong, Ivory Park, Mashimong and Emfihlweni.
“Our tournament was very successful because we were looking for eight teams in both netball and soccer to participate and we managed to get 10 teams each, which meant a great achievement for the tournament,” said Zondo.

Black Birds Netball and Football coach Thami Joseph said it was a difficult tournament because all the teams came prepared and they were hard to face, but with hard work and determination they were able to overcome the obstacles.
“Yes, we won and for me as coach I was a little bit scared for my players and they also didn’t trust themselves that they will make it. I was happy for my team and to them it means a lot. This means we can enter other competitions with confidence, knowing we are capable of winning it,” said Joseph.
“You must never give up, no matter the challenge because other teams give up because of the pressure. We still have a long journey,” said Joseph.
Sicebise Shiba, co-organiser, said for the next tournament they want to increase the number of soccer teams to 16 and netball teams to 12.
“Our next tournament will be on June 16, which will be the winter edition.
“The reason for hosting it then is because we want to celebrate the Soweto uprising of June 1976. Since June is Youth Month, we want to encourage the youth to become more involved in sports,” said Shiba.
The winners for netball was Black Birds Netball and Football and for the soccer Amajimbosi.
The prizes for netball first place was R800 and second place R400. For soccer, the first place prize was R1 200 and second place R500.
