New training club for athletes opens at Barnard Stadium

Athletes from various clubs and community members gathered for the launch of United Training Club.

Fitness and fun were the order of the day at the recent launch of United Training Club at Barnard Stadium.

Athletes from various clubs and community members gathered for the launch which included a training run of different distances.

Kori Seshoene, chairman of the new club, welcomed those present, while coach Best Ngwenya gave instructions and the route of the training run.

The distances of the training run was divided into 5km, 10km and 21km.

“This is not an athletics club as we host athletes from various clubs. It is a training group where we want to help different athletes train together,” said Ngwenya.

“We want to assist and share knowledge and the athletes are welcome to share advice among each other to help each other grow as athletes.

“We know athletes train at their different clubs but we wanted to be the extra support because at times you find that, for example, the athlete works in Kempton Park but lives in Centurion, and with the traffic and travelling, they sometimes battle to find the right time to train.

“The club is open to anyone, even to athletes who are not part of any athletics club. All age groups are welcome.”

Donald Mathipa from Tembisa Athletics Club said the event was well organised.

“The club is on the right track and I believe it will help improve many athletes. I like that they unite athletes, which is very important,” said Mathipa.

Children were also among the 120 people who attended the launch. Rainbow, Sentra Rand, Runners of Hope, Tembisa, BBK Training Group, The Champion Team and TFG Training Group were among the clubs represented.

“We are excited about the launch and humbled by the support we received,” said Seshoene.

The club meets and trains at Barnard Stadium from Monday to Thursday between 5.30pm and 7pm. Anyone interested in joining can attend the training, or contact Ngwenya on 067 331 5194.
