Women in sports honoured with awards in Kempton Park

Winners from the district awards held in Ekurhuleni, the West Rand, Johannesburg, Tshwane and Sedibeng throughout 2022, automatically become finalists for the 2023 Gauteng Women in Sports Awards.

Futballing Girls NPO hosted the fifth edition of the Gauteng Women in Sports Awards Ekurhuleni at the Kempton Park Civic Centre on October 15.

Zintle Mokoka was the MC of the event.

The awards were founded and pioneered by Moonira Ramathula.

A recipient of an award in 2017, Moonira conceived a platform that would celebrate and recognise the performance of women in sports at the district level which will lead to the culmination of the Gauteng Women in Sports Awards provincial ceremony.

Winners from the district awards held in Ekurhuleni, the West Rand, Johannesburg, Tshwane and Sedibeng throughout 2022, automatically become finalists for the 2023 Gauteng Women in Sports Awards.

This year’s awards in Ekurhuleni mark five years since the first awards were launched and its first ceremony taking place on September 28 of the same year.

This year’s most hotly contested category in Ekurhuleni was the school sports athlete and sportswoman of the year categories with contenders from athletics, rugby, netball and football and young girls excelling in multi-sporting codes.

“When I founded these awards, it was and still is about creating a celebration and recognition platform for women from the grassroots level to the elite level.

“It was also to encourage young girls and women to stay in sport or contribute to the development of the girl-child in sport and bring role models from the communities to the fore,” said Ramathula.

Divisional head of sport and recreation for the City of Ekurhuleni, Enoch Tompa, encouraged young girls and women in Ekurhuleni to continue contributing to the development and growth of girls’ sport in the metro, but also had a word of affirmation for the women in the room to understand their value and worth.

The award winners are:

• Administrator of the year: Lauren Duncan

• Coach of the year: Neo Motsamai

• Project of the year: Gauteng Women’s Rugby Institute

• Radio Presenter of the year: Tebogo Daniel SIhlangu

• Sports journalist of the year: Sharon Mdaka

• Sponsor of the year: Atlas Foundation

• School sports athlete of the year: Tebogo Mahlasela

• Technical official of the year: Maggie Dicks

• Volunteer of the year: Margaret van Bresies

• Sportswoman of the year (disability): Dimakatso Letageng

• Sportswoman of the year: Nokwanda Khumalo
