Kempton Park siblings selected for prestigious baseball tournament

The family is eager to make the most of this opportunity and is seeking support to help cover the costs.

Liam (9) and Kaitlyn Britton (13), siblings from Kempton Park, have been selected to represent Gauteng in the prestigious Inter-Provincial Tournament (IPT) baseball tournament in Cape Town.

The tournament is scheduled to take place from April 1 to April 6, where they will compete against teams from other provinces.

Monique Britton, their mother, expressed her pride and excitement about the achievement.

“It feels amazing that my children were selected to represent the Red Sox in Cape Town,” she said.

Kaitlyn and Liam Britton.

“They both are people pleasers and just want to make everyone proud. They feel grateful for the opportunity to represent their club and Gauteng in Cape Town.”

The selection process involved players from various clubs being chosen for the Easterns trials, from which the Gauteng teams were finalised.

This will be Liam’s second time representing Gauteng, having been part of the U10B team last year.

Kaitlyn, on the other hand, will make her debut in the U15 junior ladies team.

Both siblings play for the Red Sox Baseball Club, with Liam now in his second year and Kaitlyn in her first.

They also play baseball and softball at school.

Liam was scouted by the Red Sox after playing T-ball at school, while Kaitlyn, inspired by her brother’s determination and hard work, pursued her interest in club baseball despite the initial lack of clubs for females.

The siblings practice twice a week for their club on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while Saturdays are dedicated to Gauteng training sessions, which run from 09:00 to 13:00.

“Liam is looking forward to the excitement of competing against other teams, while Kaitlyn is grateful for the chance to experience the tournament and learn from other players,” said Monique.

“We very proud and blessed as parents for our children’s talents. We just want the best for them and strive to provide the best opportunities possible.”

Britton noted that the family is facing significant costs to participate in the tournament. Accommodation and tournament fees amount to R26 100, while flights will add an additional R15 000.

To support Liam and Kaitlyn in making this opportunity a reality, the family is seeking assistance. Monique will also serve as the team manager during the tournament.
