Shawn Nkuna (20), a professional boxer from Leboeng, Thembisa, is fighting for discipline, purpose, and inspiring the youth in his community.
Nkuna began his boxing journey in 2018 at the age of 13.
“I wanted to stay disciplined and focused,” he said.
“Boxing gave me something to fight for. It helped me find myself and taught me how to work hard.”
Before turning professional in 2024, Nkuna built an impressive amateur record with 44 fights, 39 wins, and five losses.

Although he didn’t win his professional debut, he said the experience gave him motivation to improve.
“I train in Thembisa with the same coaches who have been with me from the start.
“They know me, believe in me, and together, we are building a firm foundation,” he added.
A major milestone in his career was fighting live on SuperSport, a childhood dream come true.

“It was unreal. I used to watch fights on SuperSport, then at that moment I was there,” said Nkuna.
He also represented South Africa at the International Youth Games, where he earned a silver medal, and is a two-time national champion.
He currently competes in the 57kg weight division.
Nkuna is managed by Ghetto Heroes Home, under the guidance of Mfundo ‘Brazzo Raps’ Zwane, who handles his PR and digital marketing.
This partnership is helping him grow his brand and share his story with a wider audience.

Despite his achievements, Nkuna’s journey was not easy.
He juggles work, studies in logistics and supply chain management, and daily training.
“It is hard to balance everything. Sometimes there is no money, no exposure, and things don’t always go as planned. But I always remember why I started.”
He draws strength from his community.
“The support I get from the people surrounding me is amazing. They encourage me and remind me that I’m not alone in this.”
Committed to giving back, Nkuna regularly mentors young boxers, offering guidance and motivation.
“I want to lift others as I rise. I know what it is like to have big dreams and no resources.”
When asked what keeps him going, Nkuna said: “I think about my goals, my younger self, and all the people who believe in me. I’m doing this for them.”

His dream is to become a world champion and compete internationally while flying the South African flag high.
Beyond the ring, he hopes to inspire the youth and bring lasting change to his community.
His message to the young people of Thembisa is: “Where you come from does not limit where you can go. Stay consistent, stay clean, and work hard.”
Nkuna is currently awaiting confirmation of his next fight, which he will announce on his Instagram page, @shawn_nkuna.
In the meantime, he remains fit, focused, and hungry to grow.
