Gauteng dominates at Bladesports SA National Cutting Championship

South Africa’s top bladesport athletes competed in Aliwal North, where Gauteng emerged victorious in a thrilling display of cutting precision and speed.

Bladesports South Africa hosted its National Cutting Championship recently in Aliwal North, showcasing the precision, skill, and speed of the country’s top competitors.

The sport challenges participants to run through a gauntlet of cutting tasks, testing both the knife’s craftsmanship and the competitor’s cutting ability.

Challenges range from heavy cuts, such as slicing through a 2 x 4 beam of wood, to fine precision cuts, like splitting a drinking straw lengthwise, all performed with one hand.

Gauteng took top honours, with Stefan Diedericks winning gold and Alex Campbell claiming bronze in the men’s division. Blackie Swart from the Eastern Cape earned silver.

In the women’s division, Corrie Campbell of Gauteng secured gold, while Eastern Cape took silver.

Notably, the men’s medalists, along with Dave Otto, all completed the 2 x 4 wood beam chop challenge in under three seconds – a feat rarely achieved, accomplished only 14 times in the sport’s history.

Alex Campbell recorded an exceptional 1.25 seconds for the 2 x 4 chop, while Corrie Campbell posted the fastest time for women at just over 8 seconds.
