Football enthusiast Khanyisa Mhlambi (9) from Thembisa has been invited to participate in the IBER Cup tournament in Portugal, one of the largest international youth football competitions.
Mhlambi shared his journey in the sport and his excitement ahead of the upcoming tournament.
Born and raised in Thembisa, he began playing football in the streets with his brother at just five years old.

His talent was soon recognised by his father, leading to his enrolment at the Wits Junior Football Academy.
In January 2025, Mhlambi further advanced his development after successfully earning a place at the Tuks Junior Academy following trials.
He described the opportunity to compete internationally as a major milestone in his young football career.
“It feels like all the hours of practice and dedication are paying off. I am very excited to step on the pitch and give it my all,” he said.
Despite the demands of training, which sometimes mean missing out on school activities and time with friends, Mhlambi remains committed to his development. He is supported by his coach, team, mentor and his father as he prepares for the tournament.

The young player said he is particularly looking forward to competing against some of the best youth teams in the world, including Sporting CP, the academy linked to Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
“I hope to gain growth and development, but mostly exposure. This experience goes beyond results. It is about learning how to handle pressure and growing in a true football environment,” he said.
Mhlambi encouraged other young athletes to stay focused and pursue opportunities in sport.
“Start by joining local teams, play as many games as possible, enjoy the game and have faith,” he said.
