East Rand boost as Valke sign young Springboks Under 20 star Tylor Sefoor

Flyhalf Tylor Sefoor aims to reach high level with new club.

A promising young rugby talent is poised for a breakthrough season after joining the Valke on loan from the Suzuki Griquas.

Twenty-one-year-old Tylor Sefoor, who honed his skills in the FNB Varsity Cup with CUT and has already represented South Africa at Springboks U20, brings both pedigree and potential to the East Rand side.

His arrival signals a major boost for the Valke as he aims to elevate his game on the professional stage.

Sefoor began his professional journey after completing school at Hoërskool Monument in Krugersdorp, joining the Cheetahs in 2023 for two years.

He played one season in the Varsity Cup before earning selection for the Junior Springboks in 2024.

Later that year, he joined the Suzuki Griquas, where they won the Currie Cup Premier Division, and he continued to develop his skills as a fly-half.

“I love the innovative style of rugby at the Griquas. I was part of the SA Cup Final team and also the Currie Cup-winning squad.

“I chose the Valke because of their running and exciting style of play, and I’ve really enjoyed the brotherhood here. The guys have accepted me as one of their own,” Sefoor said.

Representing South Africa at U20 level remains Sefoor’s proudest career achievement, though he acknowledges that injuries at crucial times have tested his resilience.

“Facing injuries was challenging, but keeping my faith strong and relying on the support of my loved ones helped me stay focused and get back on the field,” he added.

Sefoor is focusing on improving his kicking, a key responsibility in his position. He plans to use this as a strategic weapon for the team.

He also emphasises the importance of preparation, staying calm before games, and maintaining a strong team culture.

“I remind myself of my role on the team before every match. Team bonding is critical, as it strengthens understanding and connection among players,” Sefoor said.

He also revealed his personal motivation: “Before a big game, I listen to MVP by Russ. The line ‘Own the space’ really resonates with me and helps me get into the right mindset.”

Looking beyond the field, Sefoor’s sports idol is Kobe Bryant.

“A dinner with Kobe Bryant would top my list if I could sit down with any historical figure. I’d want to learn from his insights and his expectations of himself as a dominant athlete,” he said.

Sefoor remains focused on simplicity and execution, aiming to make a significant impact with the Valke.

“I expect us, as a team, to qualify for the Premier Currie Cup, nothing less,” he said.
