Impala edge Kruinsig in thrilling U13 netball derby

Laerskool Kruinsig struggled to win their derby against rivals, Laerskool Impala.

Parents, learners, supporters, coaches and fellow players were treated to an exciting derby on May 21 at Laerskool Kruinsig, where the U13 A netball teams of Kruinsig and Laerskool Impala went head-to-head in a closely contested encounter.

Despite Kruinsig going down 17-14 on home ground, both teams delivered a spirited performance that kept spectators entertained from start to finish.

Impala coach Angelique Botha praised her side’s determination, noting their improvement compared to the previous season.

“The girls’ performance was amazing because last year it was tough as we’d end up having the same score. My girls brought the bang,” she said.

She also commended Kruinsig for their effort and highlighted standout performances from across the court.

“Kruinsig is a great team with great players,” she said.

Impala started strongly, applying early pressure and capitalising on Kruinsig’s errors to build momentum.

Kruinsig, however, refused to back down and worked hard to stay within reach of their opponents.

By halftime, Kruinsig trailed 11-6 and regrouped in an attempt to shift the momentum in the second half.
Kruinsig captain Ilané Wagner said the team remained committed despite the result.

“I think we did well, we didn’t stop playing, and we gave our best. We lost, it’s okay, but we are disappointed though,” she said.

“We should keep on fighting, do our best and never give up.”

The second half saw a stronger showing from Kruinsig, who improved their rhythm and began to challenge Impala more consistently. However, Impala maintained their intensity and managed to stay ahead.

Kruinsig coach Abby Janse van Rensburg praised her team’s effort and attitude.

“I think the girls kept on fighting until the end, they gave their best,” she said.

“I am really proud of them. I would like to tell them to respect each other, love each other and play for each other.”

Impala centre and captain Alicia van der Berg said the team’s unity played a key role in their win.

“I think our performance was wonderful. Kruinsig was good, they gave everything they had, but sorry to them we won,” she said.

Both teams were later seen sharing smiles and hugs, reflecting the spirit of sportsmanship after a hard-fought contest.
