Morero Ramaboya, commonly known as ‘Morrey,’ was influenced by his Sesotho upbringing, which was evident in the production of his current Sotho hip-hop track.
Instruments from legendary South African artist Zola 7 motivated the 33-year-old from Ivory Park to record his tunes when he was only nine years old.
According to Morrey, his latest track is due to the immense love he has for fashion, which also played a role in his life.
“My father used to play traditional Sesotho music when I was young and I grew up listening to hip-hop, it just made sense that I amalgamate the two because they define me and my thoughts are aligned with the two,” Morrey said.
His love for fashion also played a role in his recent track titled Cava Drip, which he successfully composed and produced.
Morrey draws inspiration from Thembisan’s very own Drip Footwear founder and director, Lekau Sehoana.
His track was produced to motivate youngers to live their lives by their standards and always seek ways to enhance their fashion sense even with few clothing items.
“I do not have a close relationship with Sehoana, but I would like him to serve as a mentor one day because he understands the struggles youngsters face from townships. If I am given a chance to work with him I would suggest the idea of creating a Basotho sneaker of the Drip Footwear version.”
The musician has worked with various artists, including Dj Malwela of Metro FM. To mark the next phase of his career, he plans to work with the likes of well-known Sotho hip-hop artists Ntate Stunna, Sjava, Dj Tira and Amapiano star DJ Maphorisa.
As a man in a variety of professions, which includes being an entrepreneur, producer and interior designer in the making, Morrey also hopes to open an NPO for those who are affected by mental health and also children who suffer from epilepsy.
“My son is epileptic. Therefore, I see a necessity to assist those who are affected by running an epileptic children’s initiative in the future, this is one of the conditions that affect families as a whole.”
To youngsters who want to follow in his footsteps as musicians and chase their dreams,” Morrey said.
“Always be authentic and believe in yourself, do not give up or change for anyone.
“I want to be among the local artists that inspire the youth to achieve anything they put their minds to,” Morrey concluded.
