Local stars in Pinocchio

The classic Disney story is told from the perspective of toy maker Geppetto and follows the adventures of the little wooden puppet

AN Edleen resident plays four roles in My Son Pinocchio Jr, a new production of the Peoples Theatre.

Minette Bouma (21) plays the characters of the fairy, frog, bird and tight-rope walker in the show which is running at the Peoples Theatre from until August 10.

Bouma, an ex Hoƫrskool Jeugland pupil, also featured in another Peoples Theatre production recently, namely as the Cheshire Cat and Duchess in Alice in Wonderland.

The classic Disney story is told from the perspective of toy maker Geppetto and follows the adventures of the little wooden puppet who is magically brought to life by the Blue Fairy, who informs him that he can become a real boy if he proves himself to be “brave, truthful, and unselfish”.

Pinocchio’s efforts to become a real boy involve encounters with a host of unsavoury characters. Join the Blue Fairy, Jiminy Cricket, puppet master Stromboli and a lively cast of other eccentrics as Geppetto journeys beyond the toy shop to discover the meaning of family.

Audiences will follow Pinocchio’s journey from an awkward wooden puppet to a real boy and will be charmed by Geppetto’s transformation from demanding creator to father.

The production is set to a soundtrack of popular songs, including “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “I’ve Got No Strings”, alongside a host of new tunes by Oscar and Grammy award winner Stephen Schwartz.

Pinocchio may have no strings, but parents can bet their bottom dollar that theirs will be pulled all the way down to the Peoples Theatre. The theatre is situated on the corner of Loveday and Hoofd streets, in the Joburg Theatre Complex in Braamfontein.
