He believes he’ll bring a fresh sound to hip hop

The young man also has dreams of creating an empire of music and video production through his company

KEMPTON Park resident Elias Populuane, also known by his stage name Forty Simon (FSI), is an up and coming rapper and believes he is the next big artist to come out of Kempton.

The 25-year-old Tsonga man is most certain he will be the answer to a whole new fresh sound in hip-hop and plans on fulfilling this through his music and video production.

“I first fell in love with music and hip-hop back in 2008 when my friend’s cousin invited us over to his studio to hang out. He was making beats and asked if I’d like to try out rapping on the beat. From then on, I have never looked back,” said Populuane.

And six years later, Populuane has his first single out called DIMC (Drink In My Cup), which already has a music video on YouTube. It first premiered on television screens on June 15.

The video was shot by CoolMovement and directed by Eltonnick and Fort Empire Filmz, Populuane’s production company. The video was uploaded on June 2 and already has 247 views.

“The inspiration behind the song is actually a funny story. I got the idea for the song last year after I had my very first drink of alcohol on New Year’s Eve. Let’s just say, that drink made it obvious I was a first-timer; so the song is basically about being with friends, having drinks and having a good time.

“The next day we went into the studio and that’s how DIMC (Drink In My Cup) came to life.”

The talented young man has worked with artists like Hydro and Eltonnick on Eltonnick’s new single called BENDA feat Max Tutu and FSI which was played extensively on local radio stations.

“I also want to one day work with artists such as Pro Kid, AKA and Reason, whose music I admire. Artists such as Tupac have also inspired me to make music.”

So far, the young man has recorded four music singles and shot seven music videos through his company, Fort Empire Filmz, and dreams of creating an empire which can be used as a platform by up and coming artists from around Africa.

“I believe I’m the next big thing to come out of Kempton Park bringing a fresh new sound to the hip-hop game. This is because my music is unique in that it’s all about my experiences.

“I’m basically documenting my life through my music and I also want to give the same opportunity to other talented young artists.”
