Gurulogic brings music, good vibes and inspiration

The band hopes to not only make music to make people dance but also inspire them

WHILE most artists pursue a solo career after being part of a band, Mpho Gurulogic Matlala from Birchleigh chose an unconventional path for his music career.

The self-taught pianist and producer teamed up with five talented musicians from Birchleigh, Tembisa and Daveyton in 2012 and the group Gurulogic was born.

During his journey in the music industry, the band came together when he met his band members along the way.

“He met up with our percussionist, Tshepo Conguero Motswe, in 2012, who introduced Jabu ‘TBone’Masete to the idea of being in a band as both were session artists who had worked together,” explained Bohlale Bo Rantseli, the band’s turntablist.

Masete then brought along the alto saxophonist, Tiro Romeo Mashila and the group met their bassist, Sipho Coast Tefo, while he was playing at a show at Caprivi Lounge in Tembisa.

“I actually joined the band in the most unconventional way. I was walking past the house during the band’s rehearsal and heard this amazing music and had to know who was responsible for it. I walked in and found them doing their thing and had to be part of it – I know I didn’t meet them by chance,” added Rantseli.

What sets the band apart from other live house bands is that their live performances sound as if they are being mixed by a DJ – essentially it sounds as if there is a DJ playing a set rather than a live band.

“Our music fits comfortably between the Nu jazz, Deep house, Acid jazz genre. It’s a fresh, younger kind of jazz with a mid-high tempo beat to it. This music is a fusion of two styles of jazz and house music,” explained Rantseli.

The band does not only make music to make you dance but also hopes to inspire people through their music. The band also has great ambitions and would like to see themselves join the line up for this year’s Kaya FM cruise which takes place in December.

“We’re working towards getting on that cruise line up this year and we have the faith that it will happen,” added Rantseli.

The group would love to leave people with the message that each one has a guru within them – just as they have mastered their own craft and become gurus in what they do, they believe that is possible for each person.
