The Edenvale Sports Ground was the venue for a soccer match between the Tembisa Football Club and the Alexandra Football Club on Thursday, August 21.
The two teams consist of taxi drivers from various taxi associations from Tembisa and Alexandra.
According to Thembisa Mathaba, from the Lethabong Taxi Association and a coach for Tembisa FC, “The Tembisa Taxi Association and the Alexandra Taxi Association have put together these two teams consisting of taxi drivers. The aim of the match is to decrease the stigma that taxi associations are violent and hostile towards one another.”
“It is time away from work for the taxi drivers to engage, joke and have fun with other taxi drivers from other associations. By doing this, we hope we can create a peaceful interaction between various taxi associations. We no longer live in a world in which taxi drivers kill each other over disputes,” said Mathaba.
“Another critical part this friendly game is that it helps the taxi drivers with their fitness. Taxi drivers spend most of their day behind the wheel of a vehicle and this creates back problems and kidney issues over the long term. By exercising, we actively attack this problem,” said Mathaba.
The game, which kicked off at 2pm, ended in a 4-2 victory for Tembisa FC.
Tembisa FC proved to be the superior opponent by controlling the tempo of the game and dictating the play.
Tembisa FC scored two goals in the opening half of the game. Alexandra FC had no answer to the the offensive play from Tembisa FC and were 3-0 down at the beginning of the first half.
After some complacent play by Tembisa FC, Alexandra FC looked to be on-track for a come-back when they managed to score two goals.
However, Alexandra FC’s good momentum was halted by a last minute goal scored by Tembisa FC.
