Trio to change the music scene

"In 2013 we released a mixed tape called Brainstorm the Revelations. It was a pure underground, 15-track project."

Straight Cap is set to change the South Africa hip hop scene with their unique sound.

Straight Cap coined the word Afro-Trap to better explain the genre they specialise in.

The group is made up of three members and was established in 2008, while the members were still in high school.

Kgaugelo “Verity” Setwaba and Solomon “Syper” Khoza were attending the same school at the time and Langelihle “BHF” Msipha met Syper through a mutual friend.

Verity had a studio at his house at the time.

“We called it The Bedroom Studio and we had other artists at the studio,” said Syper.

Verity said the level of commitment among the other artists was not on par so the three decided to form a group called Straight Cap and the studio eventually adopted the same name as the record label.

“In 2013 we released a mixed tape called Brainstorm the Revelations. It was a pure underground, 15-track project,” said Verity.

“There we spoke our minds and there were no boundaries,” said Syper.

They said the project was not received very well due to the immaturity of the South African hip hop market.

“Underground rap is not granted a fair chance. As a result, we had to adapt to our audience’s preferences,” said Syper.

They said in 2014 they embarked on another project and that is where they came up with the Afro-Trap style.

“Trap has always been there. Ours has an African influence in the instruments.

“Afro-Trap is an upbeat sound – our version of trap music,” said Syper.

Verity’s project finished before June 2015 and the new sound was received well.

“In 2016 we will be working on our third studio project, which is expected to be released around June this year. We enlisted the services of Dikwebe Entertainment for marketing and to manage all publicity,” said Syper.

They are still working on achieving their milestone and they have the endorsement of the community, those who have heard their music and those who became fans.
