Gift soars to new creative heights as designer

However, the year’s trials spurred the multi-talented Gift Mokwena to soar, as he just added fashion design to his extensive list of accomplishments, owing to his acute sense of style.

Mokwena thought, when life hands you lemons, you make lemonade.

This approach certainly assisted him in taking chances and moving storylines forward.

It also helped him realise that with designing garments, one might need to allow themselves to be motivated by the obstacles they experience.

“I started concentrating on my preferences and stopped wasting time on things that weren’t important. Priorities also keep me motivated to achieve my objectives.

“As a designer, I concentrated on the distinctive positioning of my style to reflect the youth rather than a fast sale, and on recurring consumers and connections because the industry thrives on them,” said Mokwena.

“The pandemic has highlighted the importance of embedding sustainability and it forms part of my brand’s DNA. It has showed that the future of fashion will be founded on the principle of not prioritising profits over people’s health and safety.

“My advice to people who want to establish their clothing line is to be motivated by a desire to contribute positively to the decision-making process rather than by a desire to keep the consuming machine running.

“This will set you apart from other fashion companies and prepare you for what will become the new normal,” said Mokwena.
