Billboard to be removed – CoE
This comes after Express brought the issue of the billboard obstructing the traffic sign to CoE’s attention.
One of the low height bridge signs located on Pretoria Road is expected to get attention after years of being obstructed by a billboard.
This is due to the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) acknowledging the location of the mentioned billboard as an obstruction.
This comes after Express brought the issue of the billboard obstructing the traffic sign to CoE’s attention.
As previously reported, signage was sighted as one of the factors that would help reduce the occurrence, which also saw the increase of such signs being erected on various neighbouring roads.
It is for that reason that the billboard partially obstructing the traffic sign that is meant to alert truck drivers about the bridge height limit was noted as a concern as trucks continuously get stuck under the Elgin Road subway.
This often causes major traffic congestion for motorists travelling on Elgin and Pretoria roads.
When asked whether the billboard was applied for and approved, Zweli Dlamini, city spokesperson, said: “The applicant lodged and subsequently obtained an approval but not at the position where the board is erected.
“The location of the billboard is detrimental and a contravention notice has been served to the owners of the board to have them remove the billboard.
“There are people appointed to conduct inspections to check if the billboards are erected in positions where they obtained an approval to erect the advertising sign.
“It was realised as a problem previously and the applicant was advised to move the structure to be in line with the approved position. However, it must be noted that at the time the structure was erected the road sign did not exist.”
