Ivory Park SAPS raises awareness on GBV
Ivory Park Saps raises awareness on GBV at Mpumelelo clinic.
Members of the Ivory Park SAPS's Social Crime Prevention Desk launched a gender-based violence (GBV) awareness campaign at the Mpumelelo Clinic in Ivory Park Extension Three on May 19.
Passers-by were given pamphlets and had their questions answered by the police who were led by Capt Nozipho Makhoba, the head of Ivory Park's Social Crime Prevention Unit.
Makhoba said the clinic was chosen in part because of the large number of individuals who come in for healthcare services.
“Officers handed out brochures and spoke with people one on one. People were informed about the types of help available at the local police station if they found themselves in the middle of a domestic abuse incident.
“Neighbours and loved ones were encouraged against remaining silent whenever they witnessed their neighbours or family being abused.
“Victims of domestic violence were encouraged to speak up, to never suffer in silence, to inform their families about their conditions and to seek help from the police station or any other facility that can help them,” said Makhoba.
