The Boksburg hiking group combined a 5km hike up and down the Koppies with many stops along the way to hear about the history of life on the koppies.
Three hours later they’d seen numerous termite colonies repairing breached termite mounds, crushed the minty leaves of the fever tea bush and marvelled at many examples of the symmetry of nature.
They also had time to study the informative boards at the Lecture Hut and the restored furnace of Johannesburg’s first iron makers.
“We still use the same principle to forge iron today,” said one of the hikers who had worked for steelmaker Iscor for 18 years.
The Melville Koppies are open every Sunday 08:00 and 11:30.
