Thembisa rapper Basso-Relievo reflects on his roots and dreams of better healthcare
Rapper and entrepreneur Mathlatse Seshibe, known as Basso-Relievo, shares how growing up in Thembisa shaped his music, his inspirations, and his vision for a healthier community.
My name is Mathlatse Seshibe, but most people know me as Basso-Relievo. I’m a rapper and entrepreneur, born in Thembisa Hospital and raised in Kempton Park.
One of my favourite memories of Thembisa is going to music festivals. The people here are full of confidence. They believe in themselves, and that energy has always inspired me.
The Moses Molelekwa Community Centre is one of my favourite places in Thembisa. It has supported many local artists and continues to nurture creativity in our community.

A moment that changed my life was when my big sister took me to my first hip-hop show at Caprivi, called Hat n Kicks.
That experience opened my eyes to what hip-hop could be – more than just music, but a voice and a lifestyle that connects people.
The challenges we face as a community are real. Health care, education, and basic service delivery are areas that still need improvement.
I’m not deeply into politics, but I believe that if our leaders don’t act, it’s up to the people to rise and make things happen.

One person who inspires me is K-Dog, a rapper from Hospital View. He was the first local artist I heard on the radio who wasn’t already famous.
Later, I met him at a block party he hosted in his neighbourhood, where he sold his own music. His drive and independence showed me what’s possible when you believe in your vision.
If I could describe Thembisa in three words, I would say it’s confident, stylish, and beautiful. If I could bring one positive change to my hometown, I would build another major public hospital.
Thembisa deserves better access to quality healthcare.
