Watch: Visitors fear the worst after spotting injured lion in Eastern Cape reserve

What initially appeared to be the aftermath of a vehicle collision at Addo Elephant National Park turned out to be a reminder of the challenges wild animals face.

Visitors at Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape were left concerned after spotting a lion lying in the road in front of a stationary vehicle, with many assuming the animal had been struck by a car.

However, a closer look – and a video shared on the George Herald Facebook page – tells a different story.

The footage shows an injured lion limping towards the vehicle before settling down in its shade to rest beside it.

The couple inside the vehicle could only remain still and observe as the encounter unfolded.

The moment highlights how quickly assumptions can form in the absence of context, and how easily they can spread before the full story is known.
