Eight of 235 Gauteng road deaths were in Mogale
Four of the eight deaths were those of pedestrians.
Soon after the festive season road death statistics were released by the Department of Transport, Mogale City’s own traffic department announced the road deaths in the Mogale City region.
Transport Minister Dipuo Peters released the 2015 to 2016 festive season South African road deaths stats and the fatalities, nationwide, increased by 220 (14 percent) from 1 535 over the same period in the previous year to 1 755.
The minister reported a shocking statistic, among many, that showed 0,4 percent of road deaths included people whose gender could not be determined “because they were burned beyond recognition”.
In Mogale City, which includes Krugersdorp, Magaliesburg, Kagiso, Muldersdrift and Hekpoort, eight of the 235 Gauteng road deaths were in the Mogale City region.
“Four pedestrians, three drivers and one passenger passed away on our roads,” Mogale City Traffic Department spokesperson, Papi Motaung said.
On New Year’s Eve, the traffic department, along with police officers, searched 27 motor vehicles in Tarlton alone. Of the 140 people searched, four traffic fines were issued.
“Our enforcement efforts continue to be targeted at the main killers on our roads: speeding, alcohol and road use, distracted driving and fatigue,” the minister added.
