Rugby balls traded in for bicycles
This year, 54 cyclists challenged their legs with some tough climbs through the City of Jozi on behalf of the Friends of Bethany House Trust.
Last weekend saw thousands of cyclists pedalling their hearts out at the 21st Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge which is held in the picturesque City of Johannesburg every year.
Not only does this cycle challenge encourage individuals to better themselves, but it also encourages them to cycle for a cause greater than their personal goals. The Telkom 947 Challenge made just this possible for caring cyclists through their Ride for a Purpose project.

Since local charities have the opportunity to register with this project, 2017 marks the fourth year for The Bethany House Trust to be a part of it. Once a charity has registered with the Challenge, any individual has the option to choose between a variety of charities, and subsequently ride and raise funds for them.
This year, the Friends of Bethany House Trust, who organised the fundraising project, had 54 cyclists who challenged their legs with some tough climbs through the City of Jozi on their behalf. Among them were two well-known rugby players, Jaque Fourie and Robbie Coetzee.
On the evening of Friday, 17 November, a Jersey Handover Celebration, attended by both Jaque and Robbie and many other cyclists, was held to wish them luck and thank them for their support.

According to Beverly Blake, leader of the Ride for a Purpose project, each cyclist was asked to donate a minimum of R1 000 towards the cause. At the end of the day, they raised an astonishing amount of more than R200 000 which will go towards projects that affect vulnerable children.
“This is a wonderful platform and an incredible opportunity for individuals to ride for a cause. What makes it special is the fact that it’s personal money from caring individuals, and not a big corporate business,” she said.
Bethany House is grateful for everyone who celebrated with them and would like to thank everyone who supported the cause. They trust that the cyclists enjoyed the race and look forward to their potential support in future.
