The rise of amateur boxing in the West
A boxing event in Muldersdrift left a major impact on amateur boxing to grow on the West Rand.
An impactful Inferno Ring Boxing Series Championship was held at Syringa Park near Avianto on May 11.
According to the event organiser, Dida Dipheko, the event was boxing and a late-night sparring event with 12 matches and 24 fighters going head-to-head. The competitors had to fight two rounds of three minutes each.
He added this is one of the only events of its kind on the West Rand because there is not a demand for boxing. Dida added the reason for this event is to promote amateur boxing fights in the area.
“We try to attract young stars to the word of boxing, away from mischief and off the streets. It teaches them discipline and respect,” Dida said.
As the Krugersdorp News attended the event, there were hundreds of spectators, eager to support their favourite boxers. Rico de Silva added that overall, he enjoyed watching the fights and he is glad that the youth is involved.
“There is a need in the community for events like this,” Rico added.
During the fights, different weight classes competed with the competitors showing the crowd a performance to remember.
“I have a lot of respect for my opponents. It takes perfect coordination and high stamina to compete, with the most difficult being the technique,” competitor Johan Pretorius said.
