From Noordheuwel to the World Bowls Hall of Fame
A Noordheuwel bowling icon's international achievements and decade-spanning career earn top global recognition.
Noordheuwel’s Hester Bekker (85) has been inducted into the World Bowls Hall of Fame for her contribution to South African bowls.
Bekker began her bowling career in the late 1960s at Florida Bowling Club before joining Noordheuwel Bowling Club, playing until shortly before the Covid-19 pandemic.
She represented South Africa internationally during the 1990s, winning gold medals at the 1994 and 1998 Commonwealth Games and the 1996 World Bowls Championships.
International bowler’s lasting legacy
According to World Bowls, her accurate draw shots and calm finishing inspired a generation of women bowlers, helping establish South Africa as an international force in women’s bowls.
