KHS pupil wins bursary competition
Grant Markram showed excellence in carrying out tasks given to him.
Life has just begun for Krugersdorp High School pupil Grant Markram who recently was announced the winner of the Johannesburg leg of The International Hotel School’s Ticket to Life Bursary Competition for 2013.
This annual national bursary competition that started in May was open to all matric pupils who had to meet the selection criteria to make it through to the semifinals. After this selection process was complete, only seven pupils were chosen to go through to the Boot Camp round for Johannesburg that took place at Mount Grace Hotel in Magaliesburg this July.
The boot camp was a four-day work experience that saw each pupil working in every department of the hotel to get first-hand experience of the hospitality industry while competing against one another for a three-year “Ticket to Life” study bursary, paid in full for the duration of the IHS programme they wish to study. The winner was announced on the fifth and final day.
Grant Markram showed excellence in carrying out tasks given to him. He showed maturity during the interview process, which put him one step above the rest. He won a 100 per cent full-time programme bursary to study Hospitality Management next year.
“Winning this bursary is truly something out of this world. When I first entered, I didn’t think that I would win, but now that I have, I truly am excited and see a bright future ahead of me,” he said.
Besides the main prize, IHS also decided to award a second and a third place, also with valuable prizes.
Taylor Farrimond from Closing the Gap Education came second, winning a 100 per cent three-year traineeship programme. Sidwell Nare from Springs Secondary School came third, winning a 100 per cent bursary for any of the two- year traineeship programmes.
In total the prize pool spread over all three campuses was valued at over R1 million.
Congratulations to all those who will begin their studies with IHS in the new year and good luck for the matric final exams!
