Casino funds equipment for technology project
Laerskool Muldersdrift will be using interactive whiteboards and an e-learning system to achieve a higher-quality learning experience.
Silverstar Casino recently donated R349 000 worth of computer equipment to Laerskool Muldersdrift in support of the school’s technology project.
The unveiling of the project to staff and pupils of Laerskool Muldersdrift, in association with Silverstar Casino’s Corporate Social Investment committee, was held on Friday 7 February.
Through this project the school’s existing equipment is supplemented by data projectors for each classroom from Grade 1 to Grade 7 and laptops for every teacher to utilise in the classroom.
“Currently we are using interactive whiteboards and an e-learning system with great success in some classrooms and this enables pupils to participate actively and achieve a higher-quality learning experience,” says Herman Byleveld, principal of Laerskool Muldersdrift.
The school approached Silverstar for a donation and after Silverstar Casino’s CSI committee had approved the funding, the project became a reality.
“We are pleased that our donation will better the teaching and learning experience at the school and as many of the parents are supportive of our business, we are proud to make a difference in their children’s education,” says Shane Collinson, General Manager and Director of Operations at Silverstar Casino.
Since several pupils can’t afford the luxury of a computer or tablet, “Our goal is to familiarise pupils with current technology and also provide them with skills and opportunities outside the normal school modules,” says Byleveld.
The new equipment will assist pupils to acquire skills such as the basic use of a computer and typing. The equipment also will facilitate various educational programmes.
“We as educators can achieve a quality teaching experience thanks to these technology aids,” says Byleveld.
Laerskool Muldersdrift, which celebrated its centenary in 2009, is a public primary school with 720 pupils from Grades 00 to 7 and caters for children in Muldersdrift and surrounding areas. It offers the standard academic curriculum and various sport activities. The school’s motto is Do it Now and with the new equipment the school definitely can live up to its motto.
