Rotary International partners with the anti-drug and HIV/ Aids campaign
SAPS embarked on a nationwide anti-drug campaign five months ago and Rotary International is committed to visit schools and parishioners and hand out campaign brochures en route.
Twenty towns and cities in South Africa and Namibia will witness 30 cyclists visiting various humanitarian projects over nine days.
Rotarians and keen cyclists will cycle 1 609km in the Rotary Tour d’ Deux Desert (two deserts; Kalahari and Namib) Annual Cycle Tour.
Starting on 18 April, the cyclists will cover an average of 179km per day. The first leg of the tour leaves at 6am from the Sterkfontein Caves in Krugersdorp. A medical and film crew will travel with the cyclists.
The funds raised from this tour will build multiple sports fields for disadvantaged schools. It will give pupils an opportunity to play tennis, basketball and volley ball. They will invite neighbouring schools to use the field and they will organise inter-school competitions too.
The Annual Rotary Cycle Tour provides an opportunity for people, corporates and businesses to get involved with the children of previously disadvantaged communities – helping them to help themselves. The multiple sports fields will create a safe environment that will keep them away from drugs and it will encourage them to participate in sport activities. In addition, some of the funds raised will be allocated to conservation.
SAPS embarked on a nationwide anti-drug campaign five months ago and Rotary International is committed to visit schools and parishioners and hand out campaign brochures en route. The Departments of Justice, Correctional Services, Education, Health and Home Affairs together with Rotary International are all creating awareness of the plight parents and teachers face in the fight against drug abuse. The Mogale City Local Municipality, the Executive Mayor of Mogale City, Koketso Calvin Seerane and several churches also have been involved actively in this anti-drug campaign.
Mayor Seerane will hand a scroll over to Rotary President Elect Steve du Plessis who will hand this to Mayor Hambelela Suzan Ndjaleka in Lüderitz at the end of the tour on 26 April.
The entire tour will be filmed and a documentary will be produced, covering the school visits and historical sites in every town or city.
