Serving the community is rewarding

The Krugersdorp Lions Club that gives back by serving its community, had a wine and cheese evening to attract new members.

Getting smiles back is more rewarding than hoping to gain something financially.

This is the message Terry Ruddy, one of the oldest members of the Krugersdorp Lions Club had for prospective members during a special cheese and wine evening on 21 February.

On this evening members had the opportunity to invite non-members to join the Club.

“At this Club you will be serving children and disadvantaged people on a voluntary basis. When you see the smile on someone else’s face you will get more out of Lions than the time you have put in,” explains Terry.

“Here it feels as if you belong to a big family that wants to serve its community.”

Peggy du Plooy, the current president of the Club said that there were many needs in Krugersdorp.

“The more members we have, the more we can do for the community.”

Immediate Past District Governor Ivan du Plooy in turn agreed that it was a wonderful organisation to be part of.

“There are about 1,35 million members and over 46 000 Clubs around the world and we do it for the love of the community we serve. To serve more we need more hands.”

De Waal Venter, a long-time Krugersdorp Lions Club member, says that we as South Africans live in a divided society because of historical and other reasons.

“We therefore need reconciliation in our country so that we can discover each other’s strong points. This Club is the ideal organisation where progress can happen as it is not a political organisation, but a service organisation.”

He says that the Club offers the ideal opportunity for different people to meet.

“We all should strive towards adopting an approach to accept everyone and start seeing them as human beings.”
