Soul City’s forgotten people

Residents of the Soul City informal settlement says that the government promised them a better life, but after each election they are forgotten and left to fend for themselves.

“They have forgotten about us and do not care how we live!”

With teary eyes and trembling lips Clara Ntsepo (62), a resident of the Soul City informal settlement in Krugersdorp explains that they are living in appalling conditions that become worse every day.

“People now go into the bushes to do what they need to do – we don’t have basic services” – Clara Ntsepo, Soul City Informal Settlement resident

“Mogale City Local Municipality and the government don’t care about us and our living conditions.”

She refers to the conditions in which people such as Aaron Molefe Moarti (61) is living.

Moarti, who is unemployed and used to live off his monthly Sassa grant now relies on Ntsepo to feed him.

Living in an open structure with only a dirty carpet as a blanket and little shelter from the cold, he told the NEWS that his identity document as well as his Sassa card got stolen when he was overpowered by three men at the end of February. They stabbed him in his left foot, making it even more difficult for him to walk.

Next to this shelter are several toilets, which Ntsepo says no longer function.
