Dancers bagged 54 medals at championship

Three crews from the Mario Gomes Hip Hop Dance Academy danced their way to success at the Battle of the Giants Championship.

Three dance crews from the Mario Gomes Hip Hop Dance Academy danced their way to success at a hip-hop competition held at Sun City recently.

The dance crews, the Hush Crew, LXD Crew and Khaos Crew with dancers from all over the West Rand managed to bag 54 medals with their dancing moves at this year’s Battle of the Giants Championship in the Hip Hop Mega Crew Formation Team Category.

Mario Gomes, the owner and coach of the Dance Academy says he is very proud of this dancers.

“The academy was ranked number one with the most dancers in the Hip Hop Dance Finals and I am proud to say that they have worked very hard to gain this title.”

At first he did not think that they were ready to compete but after two of his dancers – Nocolas Strous and Thato Dithebe – participated at the 2013 World Hip Hop Championship in Denmark and placed 12th and 8th respectively he knew it was time for his academy’s dancers to shine.

“My dancers were focused and they rehearsed on weekends and sometimes even 12 hours a week to get ready.”

He says that the dance passion on the West Rand is very strong and to prove it he says he has dancers from as young as six years old who already take this sport very seriously.

“Dancing is not always seen as something serious in the community so I am humbled to have the support from all these dancers. I know they can make careers of this art form in the near future.”

The dance academy will host the West Rand Hip Hop Championships at the Randfontein Golf Course on 24 May, which will see dancers from across the West Rand taking part.
