Young runners gather for memorial race
The young in age and young at heart came together for the well-known race in Kagiso.
More than 100 youth runners came together at the Kagiso Sporting Complex for the much-anticipated return of the Howard Ntsobi Memorial 5km Fun Run and 10km Road Race on Youth Day.
Mogale City Sports Council, in collaboration with Gauteng Athletes Federation, Kagiso Striders and Vuza Group, hosted the prestigious annual event with the hopes of cultivating sports within the community and raise funds for local schools, such as Thembelihle, Sandile and Khaselihle.
Donned in the official white tees, runners lined up at the start before taking off up Kagiso Avenue.
The route differed slightly for younger runners (five to 15 years) who are competing in the 5km race and the older group (15 to 18 years) taking on the 10km race. By the end of the race the two converged, and an army of white tee’ed runners could be seen striding up Otloanong Street via Kagiso Avenue towards the sporting complex to the finishing line.
The day ended with celebrations, as officials from the sponsoring organisations handed out medals to the winners.
While the day was about youth, the young at heart were not forgotten, with some of the elderly who participated receiving blankets.
