Parker’s brings the funny to casino

Stand-up comedy is as much about hard work as it is about wit and timing.

Parker’s Comedy & Jive is set to bring some of the country’s finest comedians to the West Rand from September, with the opening of a custom-built new venue at Silverstar Casino.

“After a fantastic residency at Gold Reef City, the time is right to spread the funny,” says Joe Parker.

“Silverstar Casino offers us a fantastic space to showcase the best of South African stand-up comedy and we can’t wait to get going there. The last showcase at Gold Reef City will be on 21 June 2014.”

Silverstar, which is being renovated and upgraded, offers Parker’s a fabulous new space in which they will deliver a world-class stand-up comedy experience.

“We’ve shown with the original Parker’s Comedy & Jive that stand-up is rapidly becoming mainstream and we believe that the West Rand is champing at the bit.”

Searching for new talent is a passion of Parker’s. They will host an open-mic talent search, Comi-Kaze, at the Montecasino club from June/August. The prize on offer for aspiring new comics is a shot at a R10 000 cash prize and a guaranteed open-mic slot at London’s world-famous Comedy Store.

Heat rounds are already under way – the next opportunities for would-be comics to test themselves with seven minutes of original material will be on 2, 16 23 and 30 July and 6 August, with semi-finals on 13 and 20 August – before the grand final on 27 August, which will be judged by a panel of funnymen from the comedy industry.

Stand-up comedy is as much about hard work as it is about wit and timing, so Parker will be offering a series of free workshops to participants, ahead of their appearance on stage. The free workshops will take place at Parker’s Comedy & Jive at Montecasino on 14 and 28 July and 11 and 18 August.
