Community raises R5 300 to cover Blackie's emergency surgery

A local animal clinic reduced its rate to ensure an injured dog received the life-saving procedure it needed.

The community raised R5 300 within 24 hours to cover the full cost of an emergency leg amputation for a dog named Blackie.

An animal clinic previously agreed to perform the surgery at a reduced rate of R4 500, down from the usual cost of between R8 000 and R10 000. The operation was set for September 30, but the BackaBuddy campaign had raised only R300 by September 29.

Residents rallied just before the scheduled operation to fund the procedure. We Are Changing Lives director Wendy Smith revealed the community came through and raised enough funds.

Smith informed the Krugersdorp News on October 2 that Blackie is up and about following a successful operation.

She said Blackie would have been in a lot of pain without the amputation and is now a completely different and lively dog.
