Fly-fishing at Kloofzicht

A total of 40 participants took part in the Fly-Fishing Competition.

With a fishing rod in hand 40 entrants, young and old, participated in this year’s Fly-Fishing Competition at Kloofzicht Lodge in Muldersdrift.

Wayne Sinclair, managing director of Sundowner Adventures says they are very happy with the outcome this year.

“This is the second year that we organised the event and so far it has been very successful.”

Adults as well as four youngsters from all over Gauteng participated in the different categories and it was clear that they were enjoying every moment of the competition.

Father and son Janie and Conrad Jacobs from Centurion have been involved in fly-fishing for over 18 years and say to them it is more of a hobby than a sport.

“We have started taking part in competitions about six years ago. It is a great way for us to see other venues and meet people who share our passion for fly fishing,” says Conrad.

“My dad and I get together on weekends and go fly-fishing for some special father and son quality time.”

During the competition they caught three fish each, and although it was not one of their best fishing days, they had fun in every way possible.

“The event was a great success and we were very impressed with the venue and the fishing dams. We always drive past Kloofzicht to participate in competitions around it and I must say this was one of the best venues I have been at,” says Conrad.

When asked what the difference is between angling and fly-fishing, he says with angling one puts down the fishing rod and attend to it only when a fish eventually bites.

“With fly-fishing you have to be active the whole time, throwing your line into the water and pulling it out slowly until the fish gets hooked.”

He says they use artificial flies to get the attention of the fish, while anglers use a variety of bait including worms and mielie pap.

“To take up fly-fishing is not very expensive, with the cheapest fly fishing rod costing about R1 000. Those who are more experienced prefer the better fly-fishing rods.

Sinclair says anyone who is interested in taking part in any of the fly-fishing competitions can contact him on 011 315 4503 or on 083 414 0391. For more information visit their website here.
