Scooter worth thousands handed over
A scooter worth more than R10 000 was handed over as part of a fundraising initiative of the South African Riding for the Disabled.
A Big Boy 125cc scooter valued at R12 000 was handed over to a lucky raffle ticket winner this morning 14 October in Ruimsig.
About 300 tickets were bought over a period of two months in a bid to generate some much needed funds for the South African Riding for the Disabled Association (Sarda), a registered non-profit and public benefit organisation. This formed part of their 30th birthday celebrations.
They rely solely on public donations and need to organise their own fundraising endeavours to assist pupils from nine schools on the West Rand with a variety of disabilities through horse therapy.
These disabilities include cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down syndrome, autism, foetal alcohol syndrome, mental retardation, visual and hearing impairment and genetic disorders.
The sponsor of the scooter, Ken Smart of KJ Smart and Associates, a short-term broker from Randburg says he is excited about being involved with Sarda.
A friend of his, Samantha Ingram, who has been a volunteer at the centre for over a year, asked him if he could help.
“So I decided to donate a scooter, which they could use for their fundraising initiative.”
He says he is glad to be part and will remain involved as his contribution will help the children who need the therapy.
Frikkie Vermaak from Chancliff, the winner of the prize says when he entered for the draw he had his 10-year-old daughter Tyla in mind.
“When I was informed that had won the prize I was overwhelmed. I am sure when my daughter is old enough to ride the scooter she probably will be riding it more than her horse,” he says jokingly.
Julia Morris of Sarda says it is heart-warming to know that people are willing to give back.
She says they are always looking for volunteers to help them as well. They also need people who are willing to donate goods or money to improve their centre and facilities. Anyone who is able to assist them in any way is requested to contact them on 011 958 5044 to find out what their needs are.
