Video: Canines freed from the claws of suffering

Battered and abused Huskies get a second chance at life.

Just outside Krugersdorp on a smallholding in Oatlands a group of Huskies lay on the decks of their house-like kennels. Others run and play, leading everything but a dog’s life.

Life, however, has not always been that good.

Each dog at Husky Heaven Rescue has gone through some degree of suffering or abuse before Brenda Meyer entered their lives.

Meyer has been dedicating her life to rescuing dogs of the Husky breed for the past eight years and recently opened a rescue site in Krugersdorp.

Being in her company one feels Meyer’s contagious passion and love of dogs, and the responsibility she feels toward them.

She tells each dog’s story – sometimes overwhelmed by emotion – and says she owes it to them to make the rescue site one of the best known to dog (and man).

Taking the news on a tour through the site she highlights one specific rescue that recently had a happy ending.

“A Husky owner lost her job and was not able to look after her dogs for a while. We took in the babies and took care of them until recently when the owner landed a stunning job and relocated to a property where the dogs could stay,” she tells.

Having spent thousands to create the site, which looks more like a retreat, Meyer admits that the rescue does rely a lot on sponsors for food, treats and grooming.

Being a registered non-profit company (NPC), the Husky Heaven Rescue can issue tax certificates and calls on the community of Krugersdorp to open their hearts to this unique cause.

One specific area where Husky Heaven needs urgent funding is to put in a swimming pool.

“We already have dug the area in a bone shape, now all we need it cement and fibreglass,” she says.
