Early morning spaza shop robbery results in 1 arrest

Swift action by private security led to the arrest of one alleged robber shortly after the incident.

A man was arrested following an armed robbery at a spaza shop in Muldersdrift during the early hours of Tuesday, July 7.

According to Guardmax Protection Services sales manager Gerrie van Rooyen, the company’s control room received reports of the robbery at about 01:34.

“Tactical response units were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officers conducted an investigation, but the suspects had already fled,” said Van Rooyen.

After obtaining descriptions of the suspects, security officers searched the surrounding area, where they spotted several individuals matching those descriptions.

“As our officers approached them, the individuals fled on foot. A chase ensued, resulting in the arrest of one suspect,” Van Rooyen said.

The suspect was allegedly found in possession of a backpack containing goods believed to have been stolen during the robbery.

He was handed over to police for further investigation. Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
