The Kagiso Police believe the criminal prey season is upon us.
Solomon Sibiya, a police spokesperson said they were concerned about the latest incidents of unusual and strange crime trends to target unsuspecting victims at public places such as malls.
“In the build-up to the festive season criminals prey on people and especially the vulnerable such as the elderly who are not cautious enough.”
In a recent incident a woman was about to do some shopping when she was stopped by an unknown man who asked her for directions.
“Suddenly he told her there was an evil creature at her home about to kill her mother. He needed to pray immediately to stop it, but first he needed a laptop.”
The woman believed him and called her friend to borrow a laptop. Once she got it she and the unknown man went to Kagiso Mall.
“At the mall the man gave her money to buy a box of matches and she left him with the laptop, her handbag, a cellphone, ID book and bank cards.”
When she returned the man had left with all her belongings.
“Kagiso Police are warning the community not to be such easy targets and fall prey to elaborate scams. Real prophets or fortune tellers do not hunt and work on the streets. Be careful of a stranger telling you strange and frightening things,” said Sibiya.
