Ten years for stealing cellphones

The police says this sentence should send out a strong message to perpetrators.

The Kagiso Magistrates’ Court sentenced 22-year-old Gugulethu Ngina to ten years imprisonment for possession of an unlicensed firearm and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Krugersdorp Cluster Commander Major General Anna Mateisi said this sentence should send out a strong message to perpetrators making themselves guilty of violent crimes.

“People are robbed of their property such as cellphones and cash in broad daylight. We will try our best to ensure that such criminals are put where they belong.”

Ngina was sentenced for a incident in May when a man and his female colleague were robbed of their cellphones at gunpoint by two suspects.

Spokesperson at the Kagiso Police Station Solomon Sibiya said the suspects fled the scene in different directions.

“A few minutes later the complainants noticed traffic officials and informed them of the incident. They ensued to search for the suspects.”

Sibiya said the suspects were spotted at an open space walking together where after the traffic officers gave chase. The armed suspect, however, managed to jump over a wall and fled.

Ngina was apprehended and found in possession of two cellphones belonging to the complainants.

The other suspect is still sought by the police.
