Prepare for black Thursdays
Krugersdorp can expect a total blackout each coming Thursday.
Residents of Krugersdorp can rest easy as this is not another Eskom report, but simply an attempt to create a community free of rape and violence.
The aim of the Thursdays in Black Challenge is to get local businesses and the community involved in creating awareness about rape and violence by wearing black each Thursday.
“Our aim is to get the community of Krugersdorp involved and to participate in the 365 day Thursday in Black Campaign,” said Karina Swart, Director of Lifeline West Rand.
According to statistics posted by Lifeline, one woman is raped every 17 seconds, adding up to approximately 211 women being raped every hour.
“If we stand together to create awareness around the high rape and violence rate in our community we can make a difference,” Swart emphasised.
She also urged the community to share the campaign ideas with their colleagues, peers in the workforce and family members by adopting the campaign and wearing black on Thursdays; and most importantly spreading the word of change. Communities can spread the word by posting their Black Thursday photos on the Lifeline website.
Participating companies and organisations can support the Thursdays in Black Campaign by purchasing the official campaign T-shirts from their offices.
All proceeds being raised will be used for Lifeline projects and campaigns.
